Biogas for Zermatt – a flagship project by the Julen family.

What began as a major challenge is now a functioning cycle: bio-organic waste from the municipality of Zermatt as well as manure and slurry are used to generate energy. The plant produces its own CO₂-neutral electricity from this – under normal conditions around 900'000 kilowatt hours per year.

But for the Julen family, it is about more than energy.

The food processed in the businesses should, as far as possible, return to the natural cycle. Sustainability is not a vision for the family close to nature, but lived reality.

At the same time, the biogas plant is a sign of connection with home. Paul Julen wanted to give something back to Zermatt – a place from which his ancestors had already benefited and which will also shape the next generation.
