Typical Tradition Julen: In this cosy speciality restaurant in the centre of the village of Zermatt, you can taste history and a sense of home in every dish. Raclette, cheese and meat fondue as well as Zermatt lamb specialities from the wood-fired grill promise genuine Valais enjoyment of the highest quality. Having trouble deciding when looking at the menu? Tip: In Valais, people also like to eat raclette as a starter!
Group reservations are not possible at the Restaurant Schäferstube.

The atmosphere in the Restaurant Schäferstube is incomparable: pure chalet charm – unrivalled in Zermatt for authenticity and tradition. Here you can experience the real, original Matterhorn village and, alongside really good food, also the hospitality of the Tradition Julen team.
Enjoy a drink after dinner in the cosy bar of the Hotel Julen, just one floor above the Restaurant Schäferstube. Fancy a beer in the pub? Directly opposite is the Papperla Pub, which also belongs to Tradition Julen and guarantees a party atmosphere. Do you prefer an excellent glass of wine and a cigar? With pleasure! The Cigar-Lounge of the Hotel Alpenhof Zermatt is only a short walk from the Restaurant Schäferstube.

Restaurant Julen & Schäferstube
At the Restaurant Julen you can choose from both the house menu and the menu of the Schäferstube.
In the Schäferstube only the menu of the Stübli is served.
Yes, a specific seating request can certainly be made. However, table allocation is carried out by the service team and depends on availability.
Yes. In all three restaurants there is a special children's menu with dishes for children.
Yes, we can gladly organise a birthday cake. Please order this at least 3 days in advance. The price is approx. CHF 12.00 per person. For reservations with half board, we surprise the birthday child with a nicely decorated dessert. In this case, no cake needs to be ordered separately.
No. An invoice with billing address can only be issued on the same day. The restaurant consumption must therefore be paid for at reception on the same day.
Larger groups can be reserved on request by e-mail.
- Restaurant Schäferstube: Groups of up to 14 people. Reservations are possible à la carte and subject to the two service times.
- Restaurant Julen: Groups of up to 20 people. You can reserve à la carte or with a set menu option, ideal also for family and company celebrations.
- Restaurant Im Hof: In summer, groups of up to 30 people. Reservations are only possible with set menu options, also for smaller budgets. In winter, no group reservations are offered at Restaurant Im Hof.
Yes, all three restaurants are accessible for wheelchair users. They can be reached either by lift or via a ramp.
For coeliac disease, unfortunately we cannot guarantee a completely gluten-free preparation. None of our kitchens has separate preparation areas for allergy sufferers, which means that cross-contamination cannot be ruled out.
As we also make our own bread and our own pasta, flour dust may also be present in our kitchens.
For this reason, our restaurants are unfortunately not suitable for guests with coeliac disease.
Yes, of course! In all three restaurants, we can cater for gluten and lactose intolerances. Please inform us of your intolerances when making your reservation or on site, so that we can prepare accordingly.
No, none of the three restaurants offers Halal or Kosher.
Yes, you are very welcome to bring dogs into the restaurant and bar.
Please note that dogs are not allowed at the buffet. During your stay, please keep your dog on a lead under the table.
Yes, gladly! At the Restaurant Julen and at the Restaurant Alpenhof we offer various vegetarian dishes. The selection of vegan dishes is, however, limited – on request, we will be happy to check which vegan options are possible for you.
The Restaurant Julen and the Schäferstube are run by the same kitchen, but offer a different ambience and menu:
The Schäferstube is a cosy grill restaurant with rustic Swiss charm. Here, only à la carte is served, and the restaurant cannot be offered as part of half board.
The larger Restaurant Julen is one floor above and offers a more varied selection. In addition to fondue, lamb and raclette, you will also find fish and vegetarian dishes as well as a daily changing 5-course menu.
Yes, at Restaurant Julen lunch is served daily from 12:00 to 13:30.

Yes, some of the wall pictures you discover in our restaurants, hotels and apartments can also be purchased.
Of course! Children are very welcome in our restaurants.
An exception is the Cigar Lounge at Hotel Alpenhof, which is reserved for guests aged 21 and over.
Yes, in our restaurants high chairs for children are available. These can also be requested on site at short notice.
Meat of the highest quality or from our own breeding
If you are interested in the origin of the meat served in the Restaurant Julen and in the Restaurant Schäferstube, visit the Julen family farm. Let yourself be introduced to the breeding of the Valais Blacknose sheep and the tradition of the Evolène cows. Paul and Paul-Marc Julen are pleased to be able to share their passion for animals and nature with you, and would also be happy to show you the farm’s own biogas plant of the Julen Zermatt tradition. Every Wednesday from mid-December to mid-April. Registrations are possible here.
